How to Play Snake: Classic Arcade Game Guide
Snake is the classic arcade game that's been entertaining players since the 1970s. Learn the rules and master strategies.
Rules
- You control a snake that moves continuously
- Use arrow keys or swipe to change direction (up, down, left, right)
- Eat the food (colored dots) to grow longer and score points
- Don't hit the walls or your own tail
- Each food gives you 10 points
- Game ends when you collide with a wall or yourself
Controls
- Arrow keys: Change direction
- Swipe: On mobile, swipe in the direction you want to go
- Pause: Click the pause button to pause the game
Basic Strategy
1. Stay in the Center (Early Game)
When you're short (under 10 segments), stay near the center. This gives you maximum flexibility to change direction.
2. Use the Edges (Mid Game)
Once you're longer, start using the edges as boundaries. Move along the walls in a pattern to reduce the number of directions you need to worry about.
3. Plan Your Path
Don't just chase the food — think about where you'll go after eating it:
- Is there a clear path to the food?
- After eating, will you be trapped?
- Can you loop back to the center or another edge?
Advanced Techniques
The Spiral Strategy
For very long snakes (30+ segments), use a spiral pattern:
- Start from the outside edge
- Spiral inward toward the center
- Keep the food on your path
- This prevents you from crossing your own tail
Avoid Tight Spaces
Never corner yourself in a space smaller than your snake's length. If you're 15 segments long, you need at least 15 cells of open space.
Common Mistakes
- Chasing food recklessly — always check if the path is safe first
- Going too fast — slow down and plan (our game has speed settings)
- Ignoring your tail — your tail is always moving, so account for where it will be
- Panicking near walls — stay calm and follow the edge
Speed Settings
- Slow: Best for learning and planning
- Medium: Balanced challenge
- Fast: For experienced players who want a reflex test
Benefits of Snake
- Improves reflexes — quick decision-making
- Enhances spatial awareness — track your position and tail
- Boosts hand-eye coordination — precise control
