Snake Game Tips: How to Get a High Score

Master the classic arcade snake game with these proven strategies. Learn how to avoid walls, plan your path, and beat your high score.

The Basics

Snake is simple: eat food to grow longer, avoid hitting walls or yourself. But as you grow, the game gets harder. Here's how to stay alive longer.

Stay in the Center (Early Game)

When you're short (under 10 segments), stay near the center of the board. This gives you maximum flexibility to change direction when food appears nearby.

Use the Edges Wisely (Mid Game)

Once you're longer, start using the edges as boundaries. Move along the walls in a pattern — this reduces the number of directions you need to worry about.

Pattern example: Move right along the top edge, then down the right edge, then left along the bottom, then up the left edge. Repeat.

Plan Your Path Ahead

Don't just chase the food — think about where you'll go after eating it. Ask yourself:

Avoid Tight Spaces

Never corner yourself in a space smaller than your snake's length. If you're 15 segments long, you need at least 15 cells of open space to maneuver.

The Spiral Strategy (Advanced)

For very long snakes (30+ segments), use a spiral pattern:

  1. Start from the outside edge
  2. Spiral inward toward the center
  3. Keep the food on your path
  4. This prevents you from crossing your own tail

How High Can You Go?

Theoretically, you can fill the entire board (400 cells on a 20×20 grid). Most players reach 50-100 points before making a mistake. With practice, you can consistently hit 150+.
