How to Play Minesweeper: Classic Mine-Sweeping Game Guide
Minesweeper is the classic Windows game that tested logic and patience for decades. Learn the rules and master number patterns.
Rules
- The board is a grid of covered cells
- Some cells contain mines (you don't know which ones)
- Click a cell to reveal what's underneath
- If you reveal a mine, you lose
- If you reveal a number, it tells you how many mines are adjacent (horizontally, vertically, diagonally)
- If you reveal a blank cell, all adjacent cells are automatically revealed
- Goal: Reveal all non-mine cells
- Right-click to flag cells you think contain mines
Understanding Numbers
Each number tells you how many mines are in the 8 adjacent cells:
- 1 = one mine nearby
- 2 = two mines nearby
- 3 = three mines nearby
- And so on...
Basic Strategy
1. Start in the Center
Your first click is always safe (in most versions). Click somewhere in the middle to open up the board.
2. Look for Obvious Mines
If a "1" has only one covered cell next to it, that cell must be a mine. Flag it.
3. Look for Safe Cells
If a "1" already has a flagged mine next to it, all other covered cells around it are safe. Click them.
Number Patterns
Certain patterns appear frequently in Minesweeper:
1-1 Pattern
When you see two "1"s next to each other along a wall, the mine is usually in the third cell.
1-2-1 Pattern
The mine is under the "2". The two "1"s share the same mine.
1-2-2-1 Pattern
The mines are under the two "2"s. Flag them both and click everything else.
Common Mistakes
- Guessing randomly — use logic to deduce mine locations
- Not flagging mines — flags help you visualize the board
- Ignoring the count — always track how many mines are left
- Panicking when stuck — sometimes you need to make an educated guess
Difficulty Levels
- Easy (9×9, 10 mines): 10% mine density. Good for learning.
- Medium (16×16, 40 mines): 15% density. Balanced challenge.
- Hard (16×30, 99 mines): 20% density. Expert level.
Benefits of Minesweeper
- Improves logical thinking — practice deduction
- Enhances pattern recognition — spot common configurations
- Boosts risk assessment — evaluate probabilities
- Reduces stress — focused problem-solving
