Minesweeper Tips: How to Play and Win Every Game

Master the classic minesweeper game with these proven strategies. Learn number patterns, safe clicking, and flag placement techniques.

Understanding the Numbers

Each number tells you how many mines are in the 8 adjacent cells (horizontally, vertically, and diagonally).

• 1 = one mine nearby
• 2 = two mines nearby
• 3 = three mines nearby
• And so on...

Cells with no number (blank) mean there are no mines in any adjacent cell — they're completely safe.

Basic Strategy: Start Safe

Click anywhere for your first move. Most minesweeper games (including ours) guarantee the first click is safe. After that:

1. Look for cells with numbers that already have enough flags around them
2. If a "1" has one flagged mine next to it, all other cells around it are safe
3. Click those safe cells to expand your territory

Common Number Patterns

The 1-1 Pattern

When you see two "1"s next to each other along a wall, the mine is usually in the third cell. Flag it and click the rest.

The 1-2-1 Pattern

This pattern means the mine is under the "2". The two "1"s share the same mine, so flag the middle cell and click the sides.

The 1-2-2-1 Pattern

This is a safe pattern! The mines are under the two "2"s. Flag them both and click everything else around the "1"s.

Flag Placement Strategy

Use flags to mark suspected mines. This helps you:

• Visualize where mines are
• Calculate remaining safe cells
• Avoid accidental clicks on mines

Advanced Techniques

Counting Mines

Keep track of how many mines are left. If you know there's 1 mine left and you see a "1" with only 2 covered cells, you can deduce which one is the mine based on other numbers.

Edge Cases

When you're down to the last few cells, use logic:

• If a "1" has only one covered cell left, it must be a mine
• If all mines are accounted for, click all remaining covered cells
• Don't guess unless you're stuck — 90% of games are solvable with logic

Difficulty Levels Explained

• Easy (9×9, 10 mines): 10% mine density. Good for learning patterns.
• Medium (16×16, 40 mines): 15% density. Requires more careful planning.
• Hard (16×30, 99 mines): 20% density. Expert level — requires advanced techniques.

Speed tips:

• Use both left-click (reveal) and right-click (flag) efficiently
• Work in sections — clear one area completely before moving on
