How to Play Sliding Puzzle: Complete 15-Puzzle Guide

The sliding puzzle (also called 15-puzzle) is a classic brain teaser. Learn the rules, strategies, and how to solve it quickly.

What is a Sliding Puzzle?

A sliding puzzle consists of a frame with numbered tiles and one empty space. The goal is to arrange the tiles in numerical order by sliding them into the empty space.

The most common version is the 15-puzzle: a 4×4 grid with 15 numbered tiles and 1 empty space.

How to Solve: Step-by-Step Strategy

Step 1: Solve the First Row (1-2-3-4)

Start by placing tiles 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the top row. Work from left to right:

  1. Find tile 1 and move it to the top-left corner
  2. Find tile 2 and place it next to tile 1
  3. Continue until the top row is 1-2-3-4

Step 2: Solve the Second Row (5-6-7-8)

Repeat the process for the second row. Be careful not to disturb the first row.

Step 3: Solve the Third Row (9-10-11-12)

Same technique. At this point, the puzzle becomes easier because you only have 3 tiles left to solve.

Step 4: Solve the Last Row (13-14-15)

The last row is the trickiest. If you get stuck, use this technique:

  1. Place tile 13 in the bottom-left corner
  2. Place tile 14 next to it
  3. Tile 15 should fall into place automatically

Advanced Techniques

The "Snake" Method

Solve tiles in a snake pattern: top row left-to-right, then second row right-to-left, then third row left-to-right, etc. This minimizes the number of moves.

Corner Pieces First

Some players prefer solving corner pieces (1, 4, 13, 15) first, then filling in the edges. This works well for visual thinkers.
