The 15-Puzzle (1880s)

The sliding puzzle that inspired our Sliding Puzzle game was invented by Noyes Palmer Chapman in 1874 and popularized by Sam Loyd in the 1880s. It became a worldwide craze, with people solving it in restaurants, theaters, and even during church services.

Fun fact: Loyd offered a $1,000 prize for solving an "impossible" version — but the prize was never claimed because the puzzle was mathematically unsolvable!

20th Century: Modern Puzzle Revolution

Crossword Puzzles (1913)

The first crossword puzzle was published in the New York World in 1913. By the 1920s, crosswords were a national obsession in the United States.

Sudoku Origins (1979)

Despite its Japanese name, Sudoku was invented by American Howard Garns in 1979 and published in Dell Magazines. It was later popularized in Japan by Nikoli puzzle company in 1986, then exploded globally in the 2000s.
